Bhubaneswar, Apr 20: In a chilling attempt to twist justice, a rape-accused man in Bhubaneswar has been arrested after he staged a gunshot attack on himself to falsely implicate the family of the woman who had accused him of sexual assault. The incident unfolded in the Balipatana area, sending shockwaves through the city’s law enforcement community.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena, the accused, Dipti Ranjan Mohapatra, claimed in a complaint that two men fired at him near a Rama Leela venue, injuring his left arm. The alleged assailants were named as Sambit Mohapatra and Rajkishore Behera, whom Dipti accused of attempted murder.

However, suspicions arose quickly.
Hidden Motive: Revenge and Deception
Investigations brought forth a dark motive—Dipti had been arrested in June 2024 following a rape complaint and charges of sharing obscene images filed by the same woman whose family he was now targeting. After being released on bail, Dipti allegedly concocted this plan to seek revenge.
Accomplices in Crime: Weapons and Setup
Police arrested two of Dipti’s aides, Amaresh Pradhan and Tofan Bisoi, who played crucial roles in the staged attack. Amaresh allegedly arranged the weapon, while Tofan was present at the scene and fled with the firearm after the act.
From the trio, police recovered:
• One 9mm pistol
• Four live bullets
• One empty cartridge
• Three mobile phones
Tofan Bisoi is said to have supplied the firearm used in the act and assisted in covering up the fake shooting scene.
All three have now been booked under multiple charges, including the Arms Act, criminal conspiracy, filing a false complaint, and attempting to mislead law enforcement. These charges come in addition to the ongoing rape case pending against Dipti.
The police are continuing their investigation and have not ruled out the involvement of more individuals.
This disturbing case is a grim reminder of how the legal system can be exploited and highlights the urgency of safeguarding victims of sexual assault from retaliation and further trauma.
