Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Coolie’ gathers momentum as director Lokesh Kanagaraj takes social media break

Chennai, Apr 22: Acclaimed filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj on Tuesday announced a temporary break from all social media platforms, stating that he would return only when the promotions of his highly anticipated film Coolie, starring superstar Rajinikanth, kick off.

"Hey guys! I'm taking a small break from all the social media platforms until #Coolie's promotions. With love, Lokesh Kanagaraj," the director posted on his X handle, sparking speculation among fans and cinephiles about the reason for the sudden hiatus. While Kanagaraj did not elaborate on his decision, the buzz surrounding Coolie continues to build rapidly.

Produced by Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Pictures, Coolie is slated for a grand worldwide release on August 14. The action thriller has already made waves due to its stellar cast, high-octane storyline, and the return of Rajinikanth in a gritty, mass-appeal role. Adding to the frenzy is the long-awaited reunion of Rajinikanth and veteran actor Sathyaraj, who are sharing screen space after nearly 38 years. Their last on-screen collaboration was in the 1986 blockbuster Mr Bharath.

The ensemble cast of Coolie is a cinematic delight, featuring big names from across Indian cinema — Telugu actor Nagarjuna, Kannada star Upendra, Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir, and Tamil stalwarts including Sathyaraj. The film will also see Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, and Junior MGR in pivotal roles. Adding a Bollywood twist, Aamir Khan is rumoured to make a special cameo appearance.

With music composed by Anirudh Ravichander and cinematography handled by Girish Gangadharan, Coolie is expected to deliver a technically brilliant cinematic experience. Philomin Raj is editing the film, which Lokesh Kanagaraj described as “an unforgettable experience” upon wrapping up its shoot last month.

Interestingly, Coolie is not a part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), Kanagaraj confirmed earlier. The film will be a standalone venture, centered around the gritty world of gold smuggling — a theme that has already intrigued fans.

With excitement mounting and expectations running high, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s social media break might be brief — but the anticipation for Coolie is anything but.
