Udupi, Apr 24: A 34-year-old gentleman, who presented with severe back pain and radiating right leg pain that left him unable to walk, has successfully undergone endoscopic spine surgery at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.
An MRI scan revealed a large lumbar disc herniation compressing the spinal nerve roots, which was the source of his debilitating pain. The case was managed by Dr Raghavendra Nayak, professor and head and Dr Girish Menon, professor department of neurosurgery, and their team, who performed a minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery to remove the herniated portion of the disc.

The surgery was conducted through a tiny incision, so minimal that no stitches were required. The patient experienced immediate relief and was able to walk comfortably the next day, following which he was discharged in stable condition.
“This technique offers multiple advantages,” said Dr Raghavendra Nayak, speaking about the benefits of endoscopic spine surgery. “It causes minimal tissue damage, leads to faster recovery, less post-operative pain, and allows for early discharge, making it highly beneficial for patients with disc-related spinal issues.”
This surgery stands as a landmark achievement for Kasturba Hospital, highlighting the institution's growing expertise in rare endoscopic spine procedures."
Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, appreciated the efforts of the neurosurgery team, stating, “This is a commendable achievement that reflects our hospital’s commitment to adopting advanced, patient-friendly surgical techniques. Congratulations to Dr Raghavendra Nayak and his team for this clinical excellence.”
Kasturba Hospital continues to expand its capabilities in minimally invasive procedures, ensuring high-quality care with faster recovery for its patients.
