Ahmedabad, Apr 26: In a sweeping pre-dawn operation, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrested over 400 illegal immigrants, while Surat Police detained more than 100 in a simultaneous crackdown from late Friday night into Saturday morning.

The Ahmedabad operation, led by the Crime Branch with support from SOG, EOW, Zone 6, and Headquarters teams, was based on intelligence inputs highlighting the presence of illegal immigrants, mainly from Bangladesh, near Chandola.

Joint commissioner of police Sharad Singhal confirmed that 457 infiltrators were detained. "Interrogation is underway and all will be deported after completion of legal procedures," he told IANS. He noted that the majority possessed fake Indian citizenship documents, and investigations are ongoing to identify how these were obtained.

Earlier, two FIRs filed in April had led to the arrest of 127 Bangladeshi nationals, with 70 already deported.

Meanwhile, Surat Police conducted raids across six police station areas, detaining over 100 Bangladeshi citizens suspected of living with forged documents and engaging in various occupations. Interrogations are ongoing to trace the networks behind the fake documents.
