Defence Ministry warns against fraudulent WhatsApp messages soliciting donations for Army welfare

New Delhi, Apr 27: The Ministry of Defence on Sunday issued a strong warning against a misleading WhatsApp message that falsely solicits donations for the modernisation of the Indian Army and support for soldiers injured or killed in action.

The viral message incorrectly claims that the Cabinet has approved the scheme and falsely cites actor Akshay Kumar as the prime mover behind the initiative. It also provides incorrect bank account details, leading to dishonoured transactions.

“The account details in the said message are wrong, leading to online donations getting dishonoured. People must remain cautious and not fall prey to such fraudulent messages,” the Defence Ministry said in an official statement.

Clarifying the situation, the Ministry emphasized that the government has already established official channels for supporting the welfare of soldiers through the Armed Forces Battle Casualty Welfare Fund (AFBCWF). This fund, instituted in 2020, provides immediate financial assistance to the families of soldiers, sailors, and airmen who are killed or grievously injured during active military operations.

The official bank account details for donations are: Fund Name - Armed Forces Battle Casualties Welfare Fund, Bank Name - Canara Bank, South Block, Defence Headquarters, New Delhi – 110011, IFSC Code - CNRB0019055, Account Number - 90552010165915, Account Type - Savings. Another account is available at State Bank of India, Parliament Street, New Delhi – 110011, IFSC Code - SBIN0000691, Account Number - 40650628094, Account Type - Savings.

Alternatively, donations can be made through a Demand Draft drawn in favour of AFBCWF, payable at New Delhi, and sent to: Accounts Section, Adjutant General’s Branch, Ceremonial & Welfare Directorate, Room No 281-B, South Block, IHQ of MoD (Army), New Delhi – 110011.

The Defence Ministry urged citizens to be vigilant against fraudulent schemes and assured that official donation processes remain transparent and secure.
