Intense heatwave to grip Tamil Nadu From May 4; public urged to stay safe

Daijiworld Media Network - Chennai

Chennai, May 1: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted a sharp spike in temperatures across Tamil Nadu's coastal districts during May, with levels expected to rise by 5°C above average. The peak summer phase, known as Kathiri Veyil or Agni Natchathiram, will begin on May 4 and continue for 25 days.

In view of the forecast, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH) has issued a public advisory urging people to stay indoors between 12 noon and 3 pm, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities during peak hours.

Residents are advised to use umbrellas or hats when outdoors and to avoid cooking during high heat hours. The public has also been cautioned against leaving children or pets in parked vehicles.

To combat dehydration, the DPH recommended avoiding alcohol, soft drinks, coffee, and tea, and instead consuming homemade drinks like buttermilk, lemon water, and fresh juices with a pinch of salt. Foods with high water content, such as fruits and vegetables, are encouraged.

Special care has been advised for vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with health conditions. Outdoor workers are urged to take frequent shaded breaks and sip water every 20 minutes. Anyone experiencing dizziness or heat stress symptoms should seek immediate medical help.
