Gurugram, May 1: Gurugram Police arrested Mustaq Ahmed (31), a resident of Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand, on Thursday for allegedly killing his live-in partner, Pooja Mondal, after she pressured him for marriage. The victim, aged 35, had gone missing in December 2024, prompting a police investigation led by the Sector-5 police station.

Sandeep Kumar, the Gurugram Police spokesperson, stated that Pooja’s sister had filed a missing person’s report in December, and during the investigation, it was revealed that Pooja had been living in a live-in relationship with Mustaq in Gurugram. The police traced Ahmed to Uttarakhand, where he confessed to murdering Pooja in Nandan Nanhar village on November 16, 2024.

Following the accused’s confession, a police team recovered Pooja's decomposed body from under a bridge near the Nanda Canal village in Uttarakhand. The charges were upgraded to include murder.

According to the police, Mustaq Ahmed, a taxi driver in Uttarakhand, met Pooja during her mother’s treatment and later moved to Gurugram with her, where they lived together for two years.

Tensions arose when Mustaq married another woman in November 2024, leading to a dispute between the couple. Despite attempts by a local Panchayat in Uttarakhand to resolve the issue, the accused, feeling pressured by Pooja to marry her, allegedly killed her and disposed of her body in the canal.

The accused fled to Mangaluru, Karnataka, and later returned to Uttarakhand, where he was apprehended. He will be taken into police remand for further questioning, and the case is still under investigation.

Police officials have confirmed that murder charges have been added to the FIR.
