Mangaluru, May 3: A 48-year-old woman from Karwar, employed as a manual labourer, sought medical attention for persistent left-sided abdominal pain lasting two months. Initial evaluation in Karwar revealed a large mass in her left kidney, prompting a referral to A J Hospital & Research Centre.
Further diagnostic tests, including a PET-CT scan and biopsy, confirmed the presence of a fibrous tumor measuring 8.2 x 5.4 x 16 cm, which was encasing the left kidney.
Following in-depth consultation and counselling, the patient underwent robotic radical nephrectomy using the advanced 4th generation Da Vinci Robotic System. Despite the tumour’s significant size and complex anatomy, the entire mass was successfully removed through a minimally invasive procedure. The tumour specimen weighed approximately 950 grams and was extracted through a small incision.
The patient tolerated the surgery exceptionally well, experiencing minimal pain, negligible blood loss, and a swift recovery. She was discharged just three days after the procedure. This case highlights the transformative capabilities of advanced robotic surgery, which offers quicker recovery times and less physical trauma—an essential benefit for the patient, who is the primary breadwinner for her family.
The surgery was performed by the skilled Robotic Surgery Team, consisting of Uro surgeons Dr Prashanth Marla K, Dr Pritham Sharma, and Dr Roshan V Shetty, with Anaesthetist Dr Harish Karanth and robotic scrub nurse Roshni providing crucial support.
Notably, the entire treatment, including surgery, was covered under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, significantly easing the financial burden on the patient.
Dr Prashanth Marla K, medical director of A J Hospital & Research Centre, stated: “At A J Hospital, we are dedicated to providing cutting-edge medical care and pioneering complex surgical interventions.
