Mamata warns against fake news after Operation Sindoor, urges calm

Kolkata, May 7: In the wake of 'Operation Sindoor', which saw Indian forces strike terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday issued a stern warning against the spread of fake news that could fuel internal tensions.

“If anyone gives fake news through any channel or Facebook, or YouTube, action will be taken against the persons concerned,” she said during a brief interaction with the media, declining to take any further questions.

Without disclosing details of her recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah—attended by CMs of states with international borders—Banerjee stressed the need for responsible communication. “This is not the time to spread wrong information. I request all to refrain from spreading information based on speculation or rumours,” she said.

The Chief Minister also urged television channels to avoid airing debate shows during this sensitive period, warning that provocative remarks could worsen the situation. “If tension or violence aggravates because of anyone’s statements, that person should be held responsible,” she asserted.

She further raised concerns about possible attempts by traders to exploit the situation by inflating food prices. “Tomorrow we will have a meeting on this issue. All necessary steps will be taken to prevent artificial jacking up of prices of food items,” Banerjee assured.
