Guwahati, May 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the state’s flagship Nijut Moina scheme has emerged as a powerful tool in eradicating child marriage and promoting girls’ education across the state.

Taking to social media, CM Sarma stated, “The #NijutMoina Achoni is helping girls across Assam to realise their aspirations by saving them from the curse of child marriage and allowing them to pursue their education. Let's hear from our little Bhagins on how this scheme has touched their lives.”

Sarma highlighted that alongside strict enforcement measures, schemes like Nijut Moina are helping build a brighter future for girls. With an outlay of Rs 1,500 cr, the scheme aims to benefit 10 lac girl students in Assam. In its first year, over 1.6 lac girls will receive Rs 240 cr in assistance.

Under the scheme, girl students pursuing graduation are given a monthly scholarship of over Rs 1,000, while those enrolled in post-graduate programmes receive Rs 2,500 per month. “We want our girls to be financially independent in their educational journey and not burden their parents,” the Chief Minister said.

A key condition to avail the benefit is that girls must remain unmarried until they complete their undergraduate studies. “The idea is to prevent child marriage through financial support and education. Once they reach post-graduation, they are of legal age to marry, and we also wish for them to lead a happy family life,” he added.

CM Sarma further clarified that daughters of MPs, MLAs, and ministers will not be eligible for this financial support, emphasising that the scheme is meant for those who genuinely need it.
He reiterated the government’s resolve: “We are confident that Nijut Moina will help us eliminate child marriage in Assam within the next few years.”
