New Delhi, May 8: Continuing its dominance in India’s telecom landscape, Reliance Jio added a staggering 2.17 million new mobile subscribers in March 2025, accounting for nearly 74% of the total 2.93 million additions across the industry, as per data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

With this, Jio not only reinforced its leadership in wireless connectivity but also outpaced its closest competitor, Airtel, by nearly double in key metrics—visitor location register (VLR) users, wireless, wireline, and 5G AirFiber segments.

Jio’s performance in the VLR category was particularly notable, with a commanding 86% share and 5.03 million additions. In the rapidly expanding 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) space—deemed the fastest growing segment globally—Jio led the charge with over 82% market share and 5.57 million subscribers as of March 2025.

The telecom giant was also ranked as the fastest mobile service provider in the country during the latter half of 2024, both across all technologies and specifically in 5G, according to Ookla’s network intelligence report.

TRAI's data indicates India’s overall wireless subscriber base—including mobile and 5G FWA—rose to 1,163.76 million in March from 1,160.33 million in February, reflecting a modest 0.28% monthly growth.

While urban wireless subscribers dipped slightly from 634 million to 632.57 million, rural areas saw an encouraging uptick from 526.33 million to 531.18 million, highlighting a deeper digital push into India's hinterlands.

Specifically for mobile wireless services, subscriber numbers rose from 1,154.05 million in February to 1,156.99 million in March, registering a growth rate of 0.25%. Urban mobile users grew marginally to 628.31 million, while rural mobile users climbed to 528.68 million.

Region-wise, Delhi continues to lead in tele-density with 275.79%, while Bihar recorded the lowest at 57.23% as of March-end, underscoring the digital divide that telecom players like Jio aim to bridge.
