Mangaluru, May 9: A safety supervisor employed by the contractor firm of the Udupi Tollway Pvt Ltd, which is undertaking repair work on a stretch of National Highway 66 between Adankudru near Thokkottu and the Global Market area, has alleged that he was assaulted by the Mangaluru South traffic police inspector.
The supervisor, Sachin Shukla, claimed he was hit on the hand with a baton by the inspector, Krishna Ananda. The incident reportedly occurred around 8 pm while the contractor was carrying out road repairs. The officer allegedly objected to the late-night work, stating that it could lead to public opposition, especially considering the traffic congestion experienced recently during repair work on the Nethravathi bridge.

The contractor’s staff have alleged that the assault was unprovoked and unjust. They stated that given the current labour shortage, it is difficult to find workers willing to work at night, but the company is obligated to complete the repairs as per its contractual responsibilities.
The contractor has condemned the alleged police action as a serious offence and said it plans to bring the matter to the attention of the state chief secretary.
