New Delhi, May 10: A recent study has revealed that more than half of the children born in 2020 may experience extreme and unprecedented heatwaves during their lifetime — a sharp rise from just 16% of those born in 1960, even if global warming is capped at 1.5°C.
The research, published in the journal Nature, analysed demographic trends alongside climate projections to assess how exposure to extreme climate events has changed across generations.
The findings underscore a stark generational divide: the younger a person is, the greater their risk of encountering extreme weather events such as heatwaves, river floods, and droughts. Children born in tropical regions are expected to be the most severely affected.

The study highlights the urgent need for stronger climate action to protect future generations from escalating environmental risks.
