Avniel Saveo D'Souza to represent India at World Bench Press Championship in Norway

Mangaluru, May 12: Seventeen-year-old powerlifter Avniel Saveo D'Souza, son of Oliver and Sangeetha Anil D'Souza from Attavar, Mangaluru, is set to represent India at the prestigious World Classic and Equipped Bench Press Championship, to be held in Drammen, Norway, from May 17 to 24. He will compete in the Sub-Junior category, facing off against top athletes from around the globe.

Avniel earned this opportunity after clinching a gold medal at the Karnataka State Sub-Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at KGS Club, Cubbon Park, Bengaluru. Competing in the 53 kg weight class, he emerged victorious with a consistent performance across all lifts. The event was organised by the Karnataka Powerlifting Association (KPA), affiliated with Powerlifting India.

Earlier this year, Avniel represented Karnataka at the National Equipped Bench Press Championship 2024 in Vasco da Gama, where he secured second place in the 53 kg Sub-Junior category.

He trains at Balanjaneya Gymnasium and Carlo’s Gym in Mangaluru. A self-funded athlete, Avniel bears all training and competition expenses with the steadfast support of his family and friends, who have played a vital role in his journey.

With the world stage ahead, Avniel is preparing diligently to give his best in Norway.
