Rajnath Singh reviews border security amid drone sightings and Indo-Pak DGMO talks

New Delhi, May 13: Defence minister Rajnath Singh convened a high-level security review meeting on Tuesday with India’s top military commanders, following renewed tensions along the border and the sighting of suspected drones in sensitive regions.

The meeting came just a day after the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan held a hotline conversation, reaffirming their commitment to peace. Both sides reportedly agreed that “not a single shot should be fired nor any hostile or provocative action taken” along the Line of Control (LoC).

However, within hours of the dialogue, suspected drones were spotted in Samba (Jammu & Kashmir) and near the Suranussi ammunition depot in Jalandhar, raising alarms. Military officials confirmed that Army units had engaged the threats, while urging the public not to panic.

“A small number of suspected drones were observed near Samba in J&K. Forces are responding. There is no cause for alarm,” the Army said in a brief statement.

The sightings coincided with blackouts in several cities across Punjab, including Amritsar and Jalandhar, triggering speculation about a possible aerial threat from across the border.

The DGMOs — India’s Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai and Pakistan’s Maj Gen Kashif Abdullah — had held their discussion at 5 PM on Monday, amid escalating tension in forward areas. Both officers reportedly discussed de-escalation strategies, including troop reduction along border outposts.

Present at the strategic security meeting chaired by the Defence Minister were:

• Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan
• Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi
• Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi
• Vice Air Chief Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari
• Defence Secretary R K Singh

The review is being seen as a precautionary measure amid volatile ground realities, and signals India’s intent to remain alert even as diplomatic and military-level conversations continue with Pakistan.
