Mumbai, May 15: In a landmark development for public transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the Phase-1 trial run of Metro Line-9 between Dahisar (East) and Kashigaon was flagged off on Tuesday, marking the arrival of the first-ever metro corridor in Thane district.

Spanning 4.4 km and featuring four key stations—Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon—this stretch is part of a pioneering double-decker infrastructure project. It integrates metro tracks and vehicular flyovers on a single viaduct, a first-of-its-kind engineering feat in the region.

Once fully operational, Metro Line-9 will significantly boost connectivity between Mira-Bhayandar and several major Mumbai transit hubs. The planned connections include:

• Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport via Metro Lines 7 & 7A

• Andheri (West) through Line 2B

• Ghatkopar via Lines 7 & 1

• Link Road through Line 2A at Dahisar (East)

Future extensions are also in the pipeline, linking Line-9 to Thane via the upcoming Line-10 at Miragaon, and to Vasai-Virar via the proposed Line-13, promising a comprehensive metro network for the extended suburbs.

Designed with sustainability at its core, Metro Line-9 is expected to relieve traffic congestion at choke points like the Dahisar Toll Naka, encouraging commuters to opt for eco-friendly public transport. Features such as regenerative braking and energy-efficient technologies further underline its green credentials.

As the trial phase begins, excitement builds among residents of Thane and the extended western suburbs. The successful implementation of this phase is expected to herald a new era of seamless, environment-friendly travel for lakhs of commuters in the years ahead.
