Kannur, May 16: In a shocking incident from Kerala’s Kannur district, an 88-year-old woman was seriously injured after she was allegedly assaulted by her grandson at their home in the Kandankali locality of Payyannur Amsom.
The elderly woman, identified as Karthiyayani Amma, is undergoing treatment for severe head and arm injuries at Pariyaram Government Medical College Hospital. The incident came to light when a home nurse, who noticed visible injuries on the victim, filed a complaint.

According to the FIR, the accused, Riju, reportedly beat the octogenarian while holding her down and even slammed her head against a wall. The motive behind the brutal assault is believed to be Riju’s resentment over her living with them. Police sources said Riju did not want his maternal grandmother staying in their home.
Family members stated that Riju initially claimed Karthiyayani Amma had slipped in the bathroom. However, another grandson, Rahul, told local media that Riju was intoxicated during the attack.
Karthiyayani Amma had been residing with her daughter Leelavathi, Riju’s mother, due to her age-related health conditions. The house is reportedly owned by Leelavathi following a family property partition.
The Payyannur police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including wrongful restraint and voluntarily causing hurt. An investigation into the matter is currently underway.
