New Delhi, May 23: As the geopolitical landscape in the Indian subcontinent continues to evolve rapidly, experts at a high-level conference on Friday stressed that India’s global vision is anchored in sustainability, cooperation, and ocean-based development under the MAHASAGAR Initiative.

Speaking at the event themed “MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions),” Prof. Chintamani Mahapatra, Founder and Honorary Chairman of the Kalinga Institute of Indo-Pacific Studies, said the initiative reflects India’s long-term goal of ensuring peaceful and inclusive growth for all ocean-sharing nations.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s MAHASAGAR vision is not limited to the Indian Ocean it embodies a plan for a harmonious and prosperous world,” said Prof. Mahapatra in a conversation.

Highlighting India’s commitment to sustainable development and mutual cooperation, he stated, “India believes that by minimising conflict and boosting international collaboration, both large and small countries can thrive together.”

Prof. Mahapatra invoked the ancient Indian ethos of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, the belief that the world is one family, to underline India’s focus on inclusive and equitable development. “No nation should be left behind,” he emphasised.

Drawing a symbolic connection between the oceans and life, he said, “Just as 70% of the human body is water, 70% of Earth is covered by oceans hence the Blue Economy holds the key to future growth, environmental care, and shared prosperity.”

He compared India’s oceanic ambitions to the ‘samudra manthan’ the mythological churning of the ocean stating, “India aims to extract both knowledge and wealth from the sea in a way that benefits all humanity.”

On regional stability, Prof. Mahapatra voiced concern over terrorism in South Asia, specifically pointing to Pakistan’s alleged use of terrorism as state policy. He also noted China’s continued support to Pakistan, which, he said, “creates obstacles for India at global forums such as the United Nations.”

The MAHASAGAR initiative is seen as a significant part of India’s evolving foreign policy, offering a blend of security, sustainable development, and strategic maritime outreach across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
