Heavy rains disrupt flight operations at Delhi Airport, situation gradually normalises

New Delhi, May 25: Inclement weather conditions in the early hours of Sunday led to temporary disruptions in flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the busiest airport in the country.

Several flights experienced delays and cancellations owing to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, which swept through the capital region in the pre-dawn hours.

In a post on social media platform X at 3:59 am, IndiGo Airlines informed passengers of the adverse weather impact, stating:

"Adverse weather conditions over Delhi have led to temporary disruptions in flight operations. While the weather is gradually easing, some airside congestion remains. We assure you that flight movements are steadily resuming as conditions permit."

However, the situation improved significantly by early morning. At 5:54 am, IndiGo posted an update confirming the resumption of services:

"With clearer skies over Delhi, flight operations are back to normal."

Despite the recovery, the after-effects of the weather event were visible on Flightradar24.com, a popular flight tracking portal, which showed multiple delays and a few cancellations. The average departure delay exceeded 30 minutes, affecting both domestic and international passengers.

Airport authorities have advised travellers to check flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport and allow extra travel time due to lingering operational delays.

The brief disruption serves as a reminder of the weather-related vulnerabilities that can impact aviation, especially during the onset of the monsoon season in northern India.
