Gaza, May 28: A United Nations official has reported that at least 47 Palestinians were wounded — most of them by gunfire — after crowds surged into a newly established aid distribution hub in Gaza on Tuesday.
Ajith Sunghay, head of the UN Human Rights Office for the Palestinian territories, said preliminary findings suggest that Israeli army fire was responsible for the majority of the injuries.
The incident occurred as desperate civilians overran the aid center, which was recently launched by a foundation backed by both the Israeli government and the United States. The facility was designed to distribute humanitarian supplies in response to growing food insecurity and displacement in the region.

“This latest tragedy highlights the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the urgent need for a secure and coordinated aid response,” Sunghay said, calling for an independent investigation into the incident.
Israeli authorities have not issued a formal statement regarding the injuries. Meanwhile, human rights groups are raising concerns about the safety protocols in place at aid hubs operating in conflict zones, especially given the volatile security situation in Gaza.
The UN and international agencies continue to urge for better access to humanitarian assistance and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law.
