Guwahati, May 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday sharply criticized Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi amid growing controversy over Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan.
Taking to social media platform X, Sarma stated, “Finally, Congress MP Shri Gaurav Gogoi has admitted that he visited Pakistan. But let us be very clear — this is just the beginning, not the end. What lies ahead is far more serious. There exists every reasonable ground, supported by credible inputs and documented information, to suggest that Shri Gogoi has maintained proximity with the Pakistani establishment.”
Sarma added that the Assam government, committed to transparency and accountability, will reveal all findings on September 10 after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) completes its inquiry. “The people of Assam and the nation deserve the truth — and they shall have it, in full,” he said.

He further condemned the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi for promoting what he called a “dangerous and compromised individual” into public life.
Earlier in the day, Gaurav Gogoi publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his 2013 visit to Pakistan and details about his wife’s background. He clarified that he had visited Pakistan once, in full compliance with Indian government regulations.
Gogoi also explained that his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, worked with an international NGO and was stationed in Pakistan in 2011 as part of her official duties.
“My personal and professional life has always been transparent and aligned with the national interest,” he said, calling for fact-based political debate and urging opponents to focus on substantive issues instead of personal attacks.
Regarding questions on his family’s citizenship, Gogoi acknowledged that his wife and two children hold British citizenship. He explained the decision, citing challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic while living in the UK, which also led to converting his first child’s citizenship to British.
This is the first time Gogoi has publicly responded to the allegations, which have gained prominence in recent days.
