IDF halts women’s combat training citing health concerns, new pilot programme on the anvil

Tel Aviv, May 30: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has officially discontinued a pilot programme aimed at training women for combat roles in frontline mobility units, citing concerns over health risks and physical endurance. The decision was taken by IDF Chief of Staff Lt-Gen Eyal Zamir, as reported by The Jerusalem Post.

The female soldiers were undergoing training to serve in critical "combat mobility units" — responsible for transporting supplies to infantry forces in active war zones and recovering wounded soldiers. While their professional performance was reportedly on par with male counterparts, the IDF stated that physical and combat fitness levels among the women fell short of the demanding standards required for these roles.

According to IDF officials, medical evaluations revealed potential health risks for the female participants, especially with the upcoming phase of the training expected to intensify. In light of this, the current six-month training scheme has been shelved.

Despite the programme's cancellation, the IDF emphasized its continued commitment to integrating women into combat roles. A new pilot scheme for female infantry recruits is set to be launched next year. In the meantime, women who enrolled in the discontinued course will be given the choice to either opt for alternative combat roles or transition to administrative or support duties.

Military service remains compulsory for both men and women in Israel, with a few exceptions. Over the years, Israeli women have made significant strides in combat units such as Oketz (K-9 unit), the elite Yahalom combat engineers, and the renowned 669 aerial rescue unit.

The decision comes against the backdrop of heightened military activity since the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks that claimed approximately 1,200 lives in southern Israel. In response, Israel has been engaged in an aggressive military campaign in Gaza. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the killing of Hamas' Gaza chief, Muhammad Sinwar — the brother of slain former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was neutralized in a military encounter in October 2024.

With national security concerns at an all-time high, the IDF continues to adapt its policies while keeping operational efficiency and soldier safety as top priorities.
