Tehran, May 31: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday reaffirmed that Iran considers nuclear weapons “unacceptable” during sensitive negotiations with the United States.
Speaking on television, Araghchi, who is Iran’s lead negotiator, said, “If the issue is nuclear weapons, yes, we too consider this type of weapon unacceptable. We agree with them on this issue.”
Western governments have long suspected Iran of seeking a nuclear weapons capability, citing concerns over Israel’s suspected but undeclared arsenal.
Iran has conducted five rounds of talks with the US aimed at reviving a nuclear deal abandoned by former President Donald Trump in 2018. The two sides remain at odds over uranium enrichment: Washington wants Iran to cease enrichment, while Tehran insists it is allowed under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Meanwhile, Trump on Wednesday said that “we’re having some very good talks with Iran” and warned Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against striking Iran’s nuclear sites, calling it inappropriate at this stage.
Israel has repeatedly threatened military action against Iran, with tensions high following last year’s exchanges of fire. Trump did not rule out military action but emphasized that Israel would take the lead in any such operation.
