CFE, Yenepoya conducts 14th intensive summer workshop on I-SWEAR

Mangaluru, Jun 2: Centre for Ethics (CFE), Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) conducted the 14th edition of its popular 5-day Intensive Summer Workshop on Ethics and Research (I-SWEAR) from May 26 to 30. The inaugural programme was graced by Dr Anil Kakunje, professor department of psychiatry, Yenepoya (deemed to be University) and Dr Vibhuti Patel, visiting professor CFE.

Their valuable perspectives greatly enriched the event and inspired all the participants. The prime objective of this workshop was to transfer skills in research ethics to researchers, healthcare professionals and enable them to develop a sense of ethical responsibility towards research and healthcare. CFE has established itself as a leader in advancing ethical discourse, training, and governance, and is recognized internationally as a centre for research ethics and clinical ethics training.

Focusing on empowering workshop participants who are engaged in research or are serving on institutional ethics committees, the workshop engaged participants in identifying and dealing with ethical issues arising in research on human participants, and in animals. Upon successful participation in the 5-day workshop participants were given the Indian Good Clinical Practice certification enabling them to responsibly conduct clinical trials and also serve in the Institutional Ethics Committees.

Each session of the workshop was carefully structured to balance theoretical insights with practical applications. Dr Amar Jesani, an independent bioethics consultant and chief editor, Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, Dr Arun Bhatt, consultant and joint editor-in-chief of Perspectives in Clinical Research. and Prof Mala Ramanathan, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum were the national faculty. The in-house faculty included Dr Vina Vaswani, director, - CFE, Dr Ravi Vaswani, professor internal medicine & faculty, CFE, Dr Uma Kulkarni, professor, ophthalmology & faculty, CFE, Dr Poonam Naik, professor Community Medicine, faculty CFE, Dr Pooja Harish, reader department of orthodontics, faculty CFE, Dr Megha Rani, professor department of pharmacology, Aarti Halwai, tutor, CFE, and Akuma Ifeanyichukwu, SRF CFE. The valedictory function was presided over by registrar Yenepoya (deemed to be University) Dr K S Gangadhara Somayaji.

As many as 40 participants from within the University and outside, from various disciplines such as Ethics committee members Medical, Dental, Physiotherapy, Ayurveda, Nursing & Hospital, Allied Health Science and Hospital Administration benefitted from the workshop.
