Mumbai, Jun 4: A 20-year-old youth who fled with a bag containing Rs 7 lac left behind on a Mumbai local train has been arrested by the Railway Crime Branch’s Special Action Team in Vasai.
Surendrakumar Srivastava (67), a Kandivali resident, accidentally left the cash-filled white bag on a Churchgate-bound local on May 15 while getting off at Mumbai Central. He was carrying the money to buy jewellery for his daughter’s wedding.
CCTV footage from Churchgate showed a youth picking up the bag and boarding a Virar-bound train. Tracking station-to-station visuals, police traced him to Vasai, where he had boarded a rickshaw to the Tungareshwar area.
After a meticulous search using grainy CCTV footage and local inquiries, police arrested Shivkumar Maurya (20) from a slum in Vasai. He confessed to finding and keeping the cash. Cops recovered Rs 6.52 lac from him.
The swift operation was led by Senior Inspector Vijay Khedekar and a 13-member team. Police lauded the teamwork and use of technology in solving the case quickly.
