Sukma, Jun 9: Additional superintendent of police Akash Rao Giripunje was killed and several others injured in an IED blast while patrolling near Dronda in Sukma district early Monday.

The device, believed planted by Maoists, exploded under his foot on the Konta-Aerobora road ahead of the June 10 nationwide bandh called by the banned CPI (Maoist).

Giripunje was rushed to Konta hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Other personnel are under treatment and stable.

This raises security personnel deaths in Maoist incidents to 18 this year in Chhattisgarh, where 209 Maoists have been killed so far in encounters, mostly in Bastar.
