Tonk, Jun 10: A picnic turned tragic on Tuesday as eight young men from Jaipur drowned while bathing in the Banas river in Rajasthan’s Tonk district. Police confirmed the incident and said the victims were part of a group of 11.

According to Superintendent of Police Vikas Sangwan, the group had entered the river when several of them suddenly slipped into deeper waters. “They were taken out and rushed to a hospital where doctors declared eight of them dead,” he said.

Three others were rescued in time and are currently stable, Sangwan added. The men, aged between 25 and 30, had travelled to Tonk for a day picnic.

The exact cause of how they slipped into deep water remains unclear, the SP noted. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
