Syria mandates modest swimwear at public beaches

Damascus, Jun 11: Syria’s Tourism Ministry has issued a directive requiring women to wear full-body swimsuits, such as burkinis, at public beaches and pools, while men must remain covered and avoid going topless.

Tourism Minister Mazen al-Salhani stated on Facebook that all visitors locals and tourists alike must ‘wear appropriate swimwear that respects public taste and cultural sensitivities.’ Women are also required to wear cover-ups or loose robes while moving between the beach and other public areas.

The new rules follow a shift in governance after Islamist-led forces ousted Bashar al-Assad six months ago. While private beach clubs deemed ‘luxurious’ may allow Western swimwear, they are still expected to uphold modesty norms ‘within general morals.’

The ministry also advised the public to dress modestly in general wearing loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and avoiding tight or transparent garments.

The move has stirred debate online. While some citizens welcomed the regulation as a reflection of Syrian values, others voiced concerns over personal freedoms and the increasing restrictions under the new regime.
