Navi Mumbai, Jun 12: In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves across the city, a 34-year-old nurse was allegedly murdered by her husband in cold blood at their Koparkhairane residence, in the presence of their two minor sons, including a special needs child.
The deceased has been identified as Gauri Shirsat, who worked at a private hospital in Koparkhairane. Her husband, Ganesh Shirsat (38), currently unemployed, is suspected to have carried out the crime over allegations of infidelity. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning at their fourth-floor apartment in Jai Ambe Society, Sector-19.
According to Assistant Police Inspector Pradeep Dupate, the couple had been embroiled in frequent arguments over Ganesh’s growing suspicions about his wife's fidelity. On Wednesday, the argument turned fatal.
The horrific crime came to light when Vaishali Patil (40), a neighbour and friend of Gauri, grew concerned after repeated phone calls to her went unanswered. “I called her hospital and learnt she hadn’t reported to work. Sensing something was wrong, I went to her house,” said Patil.
On reaching the flat around 12:30 pm, Patil found the door ajar and was met with a gruesome sight — Gauri was lying in a pool of blood, while Ganesh was found semi-conscious with a slit wrist, indicating a suicide attempt. The couple’s children — a seven-year-old special child and a two-year-old toddler — were reportedly playing nearby, seemingly unaware of the horrific act that had just occurred.
Senior Inspector Audumbar Patil of Koparkhairane police confirmed that Ganesh Shirsat has been booked for murder, and the FIR was filed based on Vaishali Patil’s complaint. The murder weapons — a kitchen knife and a hammer — were recovered from the scene.
Gauri was rushed to NMMC Hospital, Vashi, where doctors declared her brought dead. Meanwhile, the accused was shifted to JJ Hospital in Mumbai, where he is currently undergoing treatment under police watch.
The heart-wrenching case has left the neighbourhood in deep sorrow and disbelief. Police continue to probe the incident, focusing on the suspected motive of domestic discord and mistrust.
