Oman, Jan 26: Noted cardiologist Dr Basheer Malik Muhammad (76), MBBS, MRCPI, FRCPI, D PhysMed (London), senior consultant physician /cardiologist, medical director at Al Amal Medical and Health Care Centre, here, breathed his last at 10.35 am on Wednesday Jan 25 at Royal Hospital, Muscat - Sultanate Oman, due to cardiac arrest.
He is survived by wife, four daughters, three sons-in-law and grand children. Dr Basheer belonged to Beary Muslim community of Mangalore.
Born on March 27 1936 at Manjeshwar, he graduated in medicine from Bangalore. He obtained his basic medical education in India and then went to United Kingdom and Ireland for his Masters and Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland. He also obtained a Diploma in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from the Conjoint Board, Royal College of Physician and Surgeons in London. In the United States, he went on to obtain his Fellowship with American Society of Hypertension. Dr Basheer arrived in Oman in 1977 and joined the Ministry of Health where he was Senior Consultant and Head of Department of Medicine. He was also attached to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital as Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine.
Dr Basheer retired from Ministry of Health in 1996 with a vision to set up a multispeciality medical centre which would cater to all cross sections of society and provide best and ethical medical care at the most reasonable and affordable cost. Al Amal Medical Centre is the result of his dream coming true, and today it is one of the leading Health Care Provider in Oman. It is the first and only ISO 9001:2008 certified by British Standard Institute (BSI) –UK medical centre and has also obtained OPAL Certification in connection with Oman’s Petroleum Industry.
A very active person that he was, Basheer was one of the founder, member and advisor of South Kanara Muslim Welfare Association (SKMWA), which completed its 25th Year in 2011. He was actively involved in the activities of SEWA (Socio-Cultural,Educational-Economical Welfare and Awareness), a educational wing of SKMWA. He was one of the founder and vice-president of Friday Club, Muscat(1993), an All India Muslims Socio-Cultural Forum. He was actively involved in lot of philanthropic, educational and social, cultural activities of Indian as well as Omani society. He was one of the personal physician to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, the ruler of Oman. For his commendable services he has been awarded with Civil Order Of Oman Award by the Ruler of Oman.
He has a residence at Falnir, Mangalore. His wife is also from Mangalore.
On Thursday Janaury 26, the funeral prayer and Dafan(Burial) will take place at Amerat Cemetry, Wadi Hattat(Muscat-Oman) after the Noon(Zuhr) prayer at 12.45 pm(noon).
