Ludhiana, Jun 25: In a swift breakthrough, the Ludhiana rural police have arrested three individuals allegedly involved in the cold-blooded murder of a taxi driver, Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Agar Nagar. The accused had reportedly hired the victim’s taxi from a local mall in the early hours of Monday under the pretext of travelling to Raikot, only to abduct and later kill him.
The body of the 40-year-old driver was recovered from the Abohar branch of the Sirhind Canal near Tuggal village in Ludhiana. Police also seized the vehicle used in the crime — a Maruti Swift car — and two motorcycles believed to be connected to the operation.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Harpreet Singh of Mohi village, Gurtejpreet Singh also from Mohi, and Gurwant Singh of Dakha village. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ankur Gupta stated that a coordinated effort led by SP (D) Harkamal Kaur, DSP (D) Inderjit Singh Boparai, and Dakha DSP Varinder Khosa was instrumental in tracking down the accused within hours of the incident.
According to the police, the trio had lured Gurmeet Singh by hiring his cab near Grand Walk Mall around 2.30 am. The vehicle was later abandoned in Mohi village after the suspects realized they were being tracked. Investigations suggest the motive behind the crime was robbery, but when the miscreants discovered that the driver was not carrying valuables or significant cash, they allegedly decided to eliminate him.
The investigation began after the victim's wife, Narinder Kaur, lodged a complaint stating that her husband was abducted after picking up passengers from a taxi stand. She also mentioned that Gurmeet had managed to send a live location to his friend, Raminder Singh Laddi, moments before his mobile phone switched off near Hissewal village at around 3.40 am.
Police teams were immediately dispatched to trace the vehicle, leading to the arrests of the accused from different locations across Ludhiana.
Further interrogation is underway to determine the complete chain of events. SSP Gupta confirmed that strict legal action would be taken against the culprits, and the investigation would be carried out to ensure justice for the grieving family.
