Anglong, Jun 25: A 20-year-old man, arrested for the heinous rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Assam's Karbi Anglong district, was shot in the leg after he attempted to escape from police custody. The incident occurred early Wednesday as officers were transporting the accused to the crime scene for further investigation.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjib Kumar Saikia, the man attacked the police team despite repeated warnings, prompting officers to open fire. He sustained injuries to his lower body and is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital.

The accused was apprehended on Tuesday evening following the abduction, rape, and murder of the young girl, who had been reported missing from her home in the Amarajan area. Her body was discovered later that day in a well near her residence.

The Bokajan police station has registered a case under sections 65(2) (sexual assault on a minor) and 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The autopsy report is still pending.

The tragic incident has ignited widespread outrage in the district, with locals staging protests on Tuesday, demanding severe punishment for the accused. Authorities have indicated that a second FIR will be filed against him for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officials during his escape attempt.
