New Delhi, Jun 27: A notorious criminal wanted in over 50 cases was shot in the leg during a dramatic exchange of fire with the police in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area on Thursday night, officials confirmed.

The accused, identified as Vinay alias Mota (36), a resident of Najafgarh, has a long history of criminal activities including robbery and snatching. He was previously involved in a shootout with the Special Cell in 2021, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer.

The shootout occurred around 10 pm near Sanjay Gandhi Animal Hospital. Acting on intelligence inputs, police teams spotted Vinay riding a motorcycle and attempted to intercept him near Nala Road.

“When signalled to stop, he opened fire at the police. One of the bullets hit the bulletproof jacket of an officer,” said DCP Veer.

In retaliation, police fired back, injuring Vinay in the right leg. He was overpowered and rushed to a hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The police had been actively tracking him as part of a larger crackdown on robbery and snatching gangs operating in the area.

A case has been registered, and further legal action is underway.
