Washington, Jun 28: US President Donald Trump on Friday said a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could be reached within a week. Speaking at an Oval Office event, he claimed to have spoken with key negotiators and said, “We think within the next week we're going to get a ceasefire.”
The Gaza war began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel's response has killed over 56,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, and led to mass displacement and hunger. Israel insists a ceasefire must include Hamas’s disarmament — a condition the group refuses.

Trump’s comments come amid renewed interest following US-Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and a recent ceasefire in the Israel-Iran conflict. While no formal talks have been confirmed, Israeli Minister Ron Dermer is set to visit Washington for talks on Gaza and Iran.
Netanyahu, meanwhile, said Israel’s victory over Iran has opened doors for expanded peace deals. The Israeli embassy and US envoy Steve Witkoff’s office have not commented on Trump’s claim.
