Jerusalem, Jun 29: In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Israel launched a deadly airstrike on Tehran's notorious Evin Prison on June 23, killing 71 people, according to Iranian judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir.
The strike, carried out at the end of Israel’s air campaign against Iran, marked a shift in strategy — from targeting military and nuclear facilities to striking symbols of Iran’s regime.
Evin Prison is infamous for housing political detainees and foreign nationals.
Jahangir confirmed that the victims included prison staff, military service conscripts, detainees, their visiting family members, and local residents. “In the attack on Evin prison, 71 people were martyred,” he said via judiciary news outlet Mizan. He also noted that surviving inmates had been relocated to other prisons in Tehran province.
The prison reportedly suffered major damage to its administrative block.
Among those affected were two French nationals, Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, imprisoned in Iran for three years. France condemned the attack, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot calling it “unacceptable” and expressing concern for the safety of its citizens.
The strike underscores Israel’s warning that it will target Iran’s power centres in response to escalating regional tensions.
