Ottawa, Jul 1: In a strong diplomatic push, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have jointly appealed for the immediate resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive, verifiable, and lasting agreement to address Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

In a detailed joint statement released by Global Affairs Canada, the G7 foreign ministers – representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, along with the European Union’s high representative – stressed the urgency for Iran to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The ministers called on Tehran to fulfill its safeguard obligations and ensure transparency by granting IAEA inspectors access to all nuclear materials and sites across the country.

"We reaffirm the importance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which stands as the bedrock of the global non-proliferation framework," the statement noted, urging Iran to remain committed to the treaty and implement its obligations without delay.

The high-level meeting was held on June 25 in The Hague, Netherlands, where the G7 diplomats also reviewed the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East following the recent conflict between Israel and Iran.

Tensions escalated sharply after Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on June 13, targeting key nuclear and military installations within Iran. The attacks reportedly claimed the lives of several top Iranian commanders, nuclear scientists, and numerous civilians.

In retaliation, Iran unleashed multiple waves of missile and drone strikes into Israeli territory, resulting in significant casualties and infrastructure damage.

After nearly two weeks of intense hostilities, a ceasefire was brokered on June 24, bringing a temporary halt to the cross-border conflict.

With the region still on edge, the G7's renewed emphasis on diplomacy reflects the international community’s growing concern over the fragile security situation and the potential fallout of an unchecked nuclear program in the volatile region.
