Mainpuri (Uttar Pradesh), July 2: Suraj Tiwari from Kaswa Kuravli in Mainpuri district has emerged as a shining example of grit and determination by securing the 917th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. His inspiring journey, marked by immense physical challenges, is now a beacon of hope for aspirants across the country.
In 2017, Suraj’s life took a devastating turn when he met with a train accident in Dadri, Ghaziabad. The mishap resulted in the loss of both legs above the knees, his right hand below the elbow, and two fingers of his left hand. Following months of hospitalisation and bed rest, he began the long road to recovery—physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Refusing to let disability define him, Suraj pursued higher education, completing a Master’s degree in Russian from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). It was during this time that his resolve to serve the nation strengthened, prompting him to take on the formidable challenge of the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Despite the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and his physical condition, Suraj prepared rigorously for the exam. His first attempt took him to the interview stage, and he used the experience to refine his strategy. In his second attempt, his perseverance bore fruit.
During the interview, when asked if he wished to work on policies for persons with disabilities, Suraj replied confidently that he did not consider himself part of a special category and could handle any responsibility like any other candidate. His self-assured answer left the panel deeply impressed.
Suraj’s success has brought immense pride to his family and hometown. His story is one of resilience and unwavering spirit, proving that no obstacle is insurmountable with determination and courage.
