Mangaluru, July 3: In a firm crackdown on provocative social media content, Mangaluru City police have arrested a 25-year-old youth for allegedly posting an inflammatory message on Instagram that police say could have disturbed communal harmony and endangered public peace.

The accused, identified as Ashik S Kotian, a resident of Irvathur village in Karkala, Udupi district, allegedly shared a status on Instagram that read:“We don’t want any kind of answers. Blood must answer blood, life must answer life.”

The post quickly drew the attention of cyber monitoring units, leading to a swift response from the Mangaluru City Commissionerate, which had earlier formed special teams to identify and apprehend individuals circulating inciteful content in the region.

Legal action initiated

A case was registered against Kotian at the Mangaluru South police station under Crime No. 85/2025, invoking Sections 196, 353(2), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023—India’s revised criminal code.

The case was subsequently transferred to the Central Crime Station (CCS) for further investigation.

According to police, Kotian was located and detained on the morning of July 3, questioned, and produced before a magistrate the same day.

Commissionerate sends stern message

Police officials warned that no tolerance will be shown towards those who exploit social media to provoke violence, spread communal hatred, or endanger law and order. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to tracking online threats and taking legal action where required.

Residents are encouraged to report any such content to the police immediately.
