Patna, Jul 5: In a shocking incident, prominent businessman and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopal Khemka was shot dead outside his residence near Hotel Panache in the Gandhi Maidan area of Patna late on Friday, July 4.

According to officials, Khemka was returning to his home in the Twin Tower society adjacent to the hotel when unknown assailants opened fire and fled the spot. He died on the spot.

City SP Central Diksha confirmed the incident, stating, “We received information around 11 PM from Gandhi Maidan South that businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead. Police reached the hospital and crime scene immediately. The area has been sealed off and investigation is underway. CCTV footage is being analysed for leads.”

A bullet and shell casing were recovered from the scene. The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.

Khemka, a well-known figure in the business and political circles of Bihar, had earlier lost his son, Gunjan Khemka, who was murdered three years ago.

Independent MP from Purnea, Pappu Yadav, rushed to the spot and lashed out at the state government in a social media post. "Bihar has become a sanctuary for criminals! Nitish ji, please spare Bihar," he wrote.

He further alleged that had the government taken strong action when Gunjan was killed, Gopal Khemka’s murder could have been prevented.

Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
