New Delhi, Jul 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to India on Thursday after completing a significant five-nation diplomatic tour covering Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. His visit, which included participation in the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was marked by major bilateral engagements and a series of high-level addresses.

The tour, hailed as a strategic move to reinforce India’s footprint in the Global South, focused on expanding trade partnerships, boosting defence and technological collaboration, and building stronger people-to-people and cultural ties. Notably, in Argentina and Brazil, discussions revolved around economic cooperation and joint ventures in agriculture, technology, and sustainable development, with several MoUs inked during the meetings.

At the BRICS summit, PM Modi took part in key discussions surrounding global economic reform, multilateral institution restructuring, and sustainable growth. Meanwhile, in Ghana and Namibia, his visit highlighted India’s focus on developmental diplomacy, where emphasis was laid on education, infrastructure, and capacity-building projects.

The Prime Minister also made history during the trip by addressing the parliaments of Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Namibia—equalling the cumulative record of all previous Congress prime ministers who collectively delivered 17 such speeches abroad.

PM Modi was also conferred the highest civilian honours by three nations during the tour: the ‘Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross’ by Brazil, the ‘Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis’ by Namibia, and the ‘Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’. With Namibia’s honour, Modi's tally of foreign state awards reached 27 since he assumed office in 2014.

The tour has further strengthened India’s diplomatic presence, positioning the country as a proactive and strategic partner in reshaping global cooperation frameworks.
