Birbhum, Jul 14: In a fresh wave of political violence in West Bengal, a 42-year-old Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader was shot dead early Sunday in Birbhum district, marking the third killing of a TMC functionary in just a few days.

The victim, Piyush Ghosh, who served as the Srinidhipur panchayat president, was attacked near his home in Komarpur village. Police said he was shot from close range, suggesting possible involvement of someone close to him. “We are also investigating angles related to personal or business disputes,” an officer said.

Following the murder, police detained three persons, including two women, for questioning.

This is the third TMC-linked killing in West Bengal in less than a week. On Thursday, Rajjak Khan, a local TMC committee president from Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district, was gunned down. Earlier, on July 10, TMC worker Abul Kalam Azad was hacked to death during his birthday celebrations in English Bazar, Malda.

The spate of killings has raised concerns within the party and triggered political tensions in the state.
