Udupi, Jul 14: on the occasion of World Kundapura Kannada Day, Kalakshetra Kundapura Trust to host regional sport activity ‘Lagori – Hambak Madukilla’, from 9 am at Board High School Ground, Kundapura on July 20.
Kishore Kumar Kundapura, president, Kalakshetra Kundapura, addressing the media in the press meet held on July 14, said, “Kundapura Kannada is a language with little special, jokes, idioms, various traditions and rituals. Just as Tulu, Kundapura Kannada language has also gained fame all over the world with its special and unique vocabulary. World Kundapura Kannada Day is celebrated on the Karkataka Amavasya day that occurs every year.”


Kalakshetra Kundapura, which was established 15 years ago, is known for organising various cultural and traditional programmes in Kundapur. Kalakshetra Kundapura has been celebrating Kundapura Kannada Day by organising a sport event ‘Lagori’ in the name of language for the last two years. “We are bringing together language lovers and playing games that are not seen or played by today’s generation and we are trying to bring the sport that has gone into hiding back to the fore”, said Kishore Kumar Kundapura.
The sport event will be held in three categories: Individual, open and group category. Under individual category for girls and boys below 12 years Target Shooting, Chakravyuha, Goni Chila Ota, Cycle Tyre race, Bomb in the City Kundapura Version (Nimma Kalguna); for Boys and Girls above 17 years, Uppu Mudi, Gonichila Ota, Goota Suthi Ota, Cycle Tyre Race, Kambala. Under Open Category for mens and womens under 65, Gonichila Ota, Kambala, Cycle Tyre race, Goota Suthi Ota, Uppu mudi, blind pot breaking.
Under group category for mens, Lagory, Chendan Chendu, Tug of war (9 members in a team), first place winners will be awarded with cash prize of Rs 12,000 along with trophy and second place winners will be awarded with cash prize of Rs 8000 along with trophy. Women group category includes sports activities such as Dodgeball in Kundapura version, Donkalu, throwball – winning team will receive cash prize of Rs 5,000 along with trophy and second place winners with receive cash prize of Rs 3,000 along with trophy, tug of war – first place winners will receive cash prize of Rs 8,000 along with trophy and second place winners will receive Rs 5,000 along with trophy. The winners of other sports activities will receive medals, and certificates.
Entry for all sport events is free of cost. Participants of tug of war and throwball should submit their Aadhaar card during the time of registration. The last date for registration of tug of war is July 15.
