Chennai, Jul 21: A devastating explosion at a private fireworks unit in Andiyapuram near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, claimed the lives of three workers, including two women, on Monday and left several others seriously injured.
The blast occurred during routine operations, allegedly after stored firecrackers accidentally ignited, triggering a chain of explosions. The deafening noise caused panic among locals and was heard several hundred metres away.
Fire and rescue teams swiftly responded, battling flames and searching debris for survivors. Injured workers were rushed to nearby hospitals, while police cordoned off the area.

Officials confirmed the three deceased workers were trapped inside and could not be saved. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, with mishandling of chemicals or safety negligence suspected.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed condolences and announced a compensation of ?4 lakh each to the victims' families.
Sivakasi, India’s firecracker hub, has long struggled with frequent industrial accidents, raising urgent concerns over poor safety practices and the need for stricter regulatory enforcement.
