Bhubaneswar, Jul 22: Odisha has witnessed a disturbing surge in crimes against women and minors, with recent incidents sparking widespread concern and police action. In Malkangiri district, a minor girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a truck driver after she failed to return home from a birthday celebration. Locals found her in a suspicious situation near National Highway 326 and alerted authorities. The police rescued the girl and placed her under the care of Shakti Sadan shelter home, while the accused was detained for interrogation.
In Bhubaneswar, Congress youth wing leader Udit Pradhan was arrested by Mancheswar Police for allegedly sexually assaulting a 19-year-old engineering student. The survivor claimed her drink was spiked with intoxicants before the assault. The arrest followed a formal complaint.

Meanwhile, in Puri district’s Banlanga area, another minor girl was brutally attacked and set ablaze by unknown assailants. She managed to escape and is currently undergoing treatment at Delhi AIIMS for severe burns. The police have launched a Special Investigation Team to probe the case.
These incidents have intensified calls for stronger protective measures and swift justice for victims across the state.
