Yenepoya organizes felicitation ceremony for sports achievers

Mangaluru, Jul 22: The Department of Physical Education, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), organized a felicitation function to honour the outstanding sports achievers of the academic year 2024–25. The event was held on July 21 at the Yenepoya University Campus, Deralakatte.

The function was presided over by the chancellor Dr Yenepoya, Abdulla Kunhi, in the presence of vice chancellor Dr M Vijayakumar, pro vice chancellor Dr B H Sripathi Rao, registrar Dr K S Gangadhara Somayaji, controller of examinations Dr B T Nandish, sports committee chairman Dr Amar Lobo, along with deans, principals, faculty members, and physical directors.

Sujith K V, director of Physical Education, delivered the introductory remarks and welcomed the gathering. Following the presidential address by the chancellor, cash awards, mementos, and gift boxes were presented to all the achievers.

The All India Inter University medal winners were specially honored in traditional Karnataka style.

This year marks Yenepoya University’s best-ever performance in sports, with exceptional achievements at both the national level and in the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and All India Inter University competitions.

Key highlights:

Nandana (first year, library science) created history by winning Yenepoya University’s first-ever gold medal at the AIU All India Inter University Powerlifting Championship 2024–25, held at the University of Kashmir, Srinagar.

Sym Dev (second year, BA sports studies) secured a bronze medal at the AIU All India Inter University Best Physique Championship 2024–25, held at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala.

Rohit Soman (library science) qualified for the Khelo India National University Games in Fencing, through the AIU All India Fencing Championship, held at the University of Jammu.

Additionally, 19 students from Yenepoya University represented various states in national-level competitions:

Kabaddi – 10 students

Football – 4 students

Fencing – 4 students

Pencak Silat – 1 student

The University also honored both internal and external coaches who accompanied and mentored the university teams throughout these competitions, recognizing their valuable contributions to the athletes' development and success.

The Department of Physical Education has expressed its appreciation to the Yenepoya University management for their unwavering support in promoting sporting excellence and creating opportunities for student-athletes to thrive at the highest levels.
