California, Jul 26: In a major move to bolster its AI capabilities, Meta Platforms has appointed Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of ChatGPT, as chief scientist of its newly launched Superintelligence Lab, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday.
Zhao, a former OpenAI research scientist, played a pivotal role in developing ChatGPT, GPT-4, and other mini models like 4.1 and o3. He will now lead the lab’s research agenda and scientific direction, working directly with Zuckerberg and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, formerly of Scale AI.
The appointment comes as Meta aggressively expands its AI team, especially after underwhelming feedback on its Llama 4 model. Zhao’s move is part of a broader AI talent shift from OpenAI to Meta in recent weeks.
Meta’s Superintelligence Lab aims to advance work on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and functions separately from its established AI wing, FAIR, headed by AI pioneer Yann LeCun.
Zuckerberg has reiterated Meta's commitment to building open-source AGI, a bold strategy that continues to spark debate across the tech world.
