Tehran, Aug 4: Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has approved the formation of a new national defence council, to be chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian, signaling a major structural shift in the country’s security and military governance, according to SNSC-affiliated Nour News.

The newly established council will serve as a centralized authority to review national defence strategies and enhance the operational capabilities of the Iranian armed forces, the report said. The body will include leaders of Iran’s executive, judiciary, and legislative branches, as well as top military commanders and key ministers.

Nour News also hinted at broader shake-ups within Iran’s high-ranking security institutions, noting on social media platform X that “the likelihood of imminent changes at the senior-most levels has increased” following preparatory reforms.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to its peaceful nuclear programme, including uranium enrichment, ahead of upcoming talks with European nations.

“We will continue to steadfastly defend the rights of the Iranian people in peaceful nuclear energy, particularly enrichment,” Araghchi stated during a meeting with the family of Major General Mohammad Baqeri in Tehran. He emphasized that Iran's nuclear pursuits remain lawful and within the framework of international agreements.

“Our enrichment will continue; we will not relinquish this right,” he reiterated, as reported by Tasnim News Agency.

The developments come amid rising global scrutiny over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and domestic efforts to streamline defence and security decision-making under the new administration.
