Mangaluru, Aug 7: A literary session commemorating the legacy of Jnanpith awardee Vinayaka Krishna Gokak was conducted at the auditorium of Milagres College, Mangaluru on July 7.
The event was part of the fifth session of the “Introduction Series on the Poetical and Literary Legacy of V.K Gokak,” jointly organized by the Dakshina Kannada District Sahitya Parishat and Milagres College.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Madhava M K, member of the central executive committee of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bengaluru, said, “Human beings are social creatures. Through language, they shape their families, communities, and societies. Language is a vital force in the development of literature.” He further emphasized that Gokak’s works are imbued with universal human values. “Though born a Kannadiga, he evolved as a true Indian. He was equally proficient in Kannada and English and possessed an extraordinary perspective,” he added.

In his address, Dr Alwyn Serrao, principal of Milagres College, encouraged students to cultivate imagination through reading, highlighting that the writings of Jnanpith laureates serve as excellent inspiration.
Presiding over the event, Dr M P Srinath, president of the Dakshina Kannada District Sahitya Parishat, stated that such events help keep the memory and legacy of Jnanpith awardees alive. “This year, we are conducting a series of lectures dedicated to V K Gokak,” he informed.
Sowmya Kotian delivered the welcome address, and Mamatha Shetty compered the event and proposed a vote of thanks.
The program was attended by faculty, students, and literary enthusiasts, marking another enriching chapter in the institution’s commitment to promoting literary heritage.
