Fort Stewart, Aug 7: Five soldiers were injured in a shooting at Fort Stewart, the largest US Army base east of the Mississippi River, after a fellow soldier opened fire with a personal handgun. The incident prompted a temporary lockdown on Wednesday.
The shooter has been identified as Quornelius Radford, an automated logistics sergeant. Major General John Lubas of the 3rd Infantry Division confirmed the weapon used was not military-issued, but a personal firearm. Authorities are still investigating Radford’s motive.
“All injured soldiers were treated on-site before being moved to Winn Army Community Hospital. All are currently in stable condition,” officials said, adding that the base lockdown, initiated at 11:04 a.m., was lifted later in the day.
Radford, who has a previous DUI arrest, is in custody, and the FBI’s Savannah office is assisting Army investigators with the case.
“There is no active threat to the community,” Fort Stewart officials said. The investigation is ongoing.
