New Delhi, Aug 9: On the occasion of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, also known as World Tribal Day, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, reaffirmed his party's commitment to tribal rights, culture, and dignity.

Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi wrote:

“Heartfelt greetings to all tribal brothers and sisters on World Indigenous Peoples' Day. Your traditions and life values have enriched India's identity. You are the first owners of India, and we stand with you in your fight for rights, dignity, and justice.”

Joining him, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also conveyed wishes to tribal communities across the country.

“Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all citizens of our tribal society. The conservation of water, forest, land, and tribal civilisation and traditions is our aim, and the Congress Party is fully dedicated to protecting your interests,” Kharge stated.

Observed every year on August 9, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples aims to highlight the diverse cultures of indigenous communities and raise awareness about the socio-economic challenges they face, including discrimination, marginalisation, and restricted access to healthcare and education.

The United Nations General Assembly designated the day in 1994, marking the anniversary of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in 1982. The day serves as a global reminder to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples and honour their contributions to environmental conservation, sustainable living, and cultural heritage.

Despite comprising only about 5–6% of the world’s population, indigenous communities worldwide continue to face systemic inequities. The observance calls for urgent global efforts to uphold their rights, ensure justice, and preserve their way of life.

With prominent political leaders voicing support and acknowledging the importance of tribal heritage, the day holds renewed significance in shaping inclusive and equitable policies for indigenous populations in India and beyond.
